Gambling Minister reveals White Paper is “with No 10” in resignation letter

Chris Philp has bowed out as Gambling Minister and called on Boris Johnson to resign.

Citing recent events, Philp said he was unable to continue serving in Johnson’s government, and urged the Prime Minister to step down.

“Given events over the past few weeks and months, I therefore think that you should resign as Prime Minister and it follows that I cannot serve in your government any longer,” he wrote.

The MP for Croydon South had been Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy, serving under DCMS Chief Nadine Dorries and leading the long-awaited Gambling Review.

Only last week, it was reported that publication of a White Paper on gambling reform was imminent, but Philp’s resignation, and the general turmoil in government, will likely raise concerns.

The outgoing minister announced his decision to step down via Twitter, posting a photograph of his full resignation letter.

This included an update on the Gambling Review, which according to Philp, “is with No 10 at the moment for final approval.”

He said it contains “strong measures to protect people from the ravages of gambling addiction,” and issued a direct plea to Johnson, urging him to “deliver the review in full and undiluted.”

“I have met with the families of those who have committed suicide as a result of gambling addiction, and I strongly urge you to deliver the review in full and undiluted,” wrote Philp.

Last week, a DCMS spokesperson called it “the most comprehensive review of gambling laws in 15 years,” and said the White Paper was due “in the coming weeks.”
